Malayà is a modern Filipino restaurant in Reno, Nevada that strives to enhance the culinary landscape of the community by elevating classic and contemporary Filipino dishes, using thoughtful high-quality ingredients, and providing a memorable dining experience. Malayà, which means “free” in Tagalog, remains committed to preserving traditional Filipino cooking methods and flavors, while upholding the freedom and creativity in our food and beverage presentation. STORY
Born and raised in General Trias, Cavite, Philippines, Aren and Therese, together with their childhood friend and schoolmate, JP, dreamed of sharing their Filipino culture and upbringing through food, and decided to do their first pop-up at the Riverside Farmers Market in June 2023.
With the positive response and continued support of the community, they officially started food truck operations and catering services in January 2024. During the first year, they maintained regular attendance at the weekly Riverside Farmers Market, vended at various local events in Reno, and catered special occasions including weddings.
The second year allowed them to focus on consistent steady growth with the opportunity to serve regularly at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center in Storey County. The Riverside Farmers Market, the summer event Truckee Thursdays, and special catering events were the highlights of 2025.
In September 2025, Malayà finally found a place to call home. They opened their restaurant location on 805 South Wells Avenue in Reno on January 10, 2026. It is truly remarkable how the community continues to support this little passion project that fruitfully found its way to provide a beautiful space for everyone to gather, connect, and enjoy delicious Filipino cuisine.
Today, Malayà is led by our amazing chefs, RJ, Pablo, and Joshua, along with our brilliant restaurant and bar manager, Angelo. Together with our wonderful team, we shall continue with our mission to elevate classic and contemporary Filipino dishes, to use thoughtful high-quality ingredients, and to provide a memorable dining experience where everyone feels that you are a part of the family. Malayà is proud to be a veteran, minority, and family-owned business.
